Erie Feeling Tourism Boom Thanks to Nasty Weather

Although we may be seeing white, business owners are seeing green.
February 12, 2014- The nasty weather isn't stopping Erie from being a tourism hot spot.
Erie County is seeing a significant boom in outside visitors thanks to Mother Nature.
There's no business, like snow business....
Although we may be seeing white, business owners are seeing green.
Erie is on top of the snow mountain ranking as the snowiest city in the country according to GoldenSnowGlobe.com.
Our flagship city even got a shout out on Good Morning America Monday for hitting nearly 108 inches of snow.
And as the amount of snow grows, hotel visit numbers climb according to Visit Erie CEO and President John Oliver.
Oliver says people are flocking to Erie to enjoy the snow, utilizing area ski resorts like Peek ‘n Peak….
He says hotel tax revenue is significantly up this December in comparison to year’s past.
Chris Scott of Scott Enterprises says this year the snow has made all of the difference for his businesses: both the Peek and Splash Lagoon are doing significantly well.
And other outdoor activities like ice fishing are also aiding in boosting business for mom and pop fishing shops like BAC Bait and Tackle.
Owners there tell us that this is the busiest the shop has been in more than five years.
For some, Splash Lagoon has become a personal oasis....
Scott says the indoor water park has become the perfect spot to cope with cabin fever.
Visit Erie officials say additional advertising in Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Cleveland has also boosted tourism revenue.
