Students and staff from Erie's Public Schools will join together with area college students, local businesses and volunteers this week to participate in the annual United Way Days of Caring.

Each year, members of the EPS community dedicate a few hours in order to volunteer for various service projects within the Erie area. School beautification and wetland cleanup are among the projects students will participate in this year:

Friday, April 25 | Strong Vincent High School (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)
Strong Vincent students and staff will work together to beautify the school grounds and surrounding area. Nearly 60 high school students will pick up trash, clean out weeds and plant flowers around the outside of the high school building on West 8th Street to show pride in their school.

Saturday, April 26 | JoAnna Connell School (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)
JoAnna Connell will use the 'Day of Caring' event to launch a multi-year effort to clean out a wetland on the school's property. The end goal of the project is an outdoor learning environment available for use by students and the community. On Saturday, JoAnna Connell families and staff will be joined by students from Gannon University, area Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and community members in the cleanup effort.

Happi 92.7 radio will also broadcast live from the school. Dahlkemper Landscaping is working with the school and students to design and develop the outdoor classroom and other local businesses are helping with the surrounding property. The Tom Ridge Environmental Center (TREC) will be working with fifth grade students this week to identify, remove and manage invasive species on the property.

Each year, United Way of Erie County organizes the Day of Caring to provide ways for volunteers to serve and improve the region. According to organizers, the event also offers students an opportunity to join forces with other volunteers to see how working together can address our community's needs.
