Free Depression Screenings

A collaboration new to the Erie area seeks to improve mental health in the community
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Erie County, Millcreek Community Hospital, Stairways Behavioral Health, Safe Harbor Behavioral Health, the Barber National Institute, the Erie VA Medical Center, and Corry Counseling Services are working together to provide free depression screenings for the public. The organizations will be holding a press conference to formally announce this partnership on Wednesday, April 9th, 2014 at the NAMI offices, located at 1611 Peach Street, Suite 105.

According to the World Health Organization, depression is the greatest cause of disability worldwide. Depression treatment, however, has proven to be effective for over 80% of people who undergo the process. With the prevalence of depression in today’s society, it is important to be screened by a professional clinical psychologist, especially when current treatment methods have proven to be so effective.

The screenings take place on Wednesday, April 23rd at the Blasco Memorial Library, located at 160 East Front Street, beginning with a 10:00 a.m. -11:30 a.m. session and followed by a 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. session. Clinical Psychologists from Stairways Behavioral Health will be available for private one-on-one depression screenings. Informational tables about the different services the organizations offer will also be available. Walk-ins are welcome and no registration is necessary.

In an effort to raise mental health awareness and increase the health of the Erie Community, NAMI of Erie County, Millcreek Community Hospital, Stairways Behavioral Health, Safe Harbor Behavioral Health, the Barber National Institute, the Erie VA Medical Center, and Corry Counseling Services will continue to offer free mental health screenings, such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mental health issues, throughout the year. All screenings will be free and open to the public.
