Gannon University Students Host Relay for Life

“When You Wish Upon A Star, A Cure For Cancer Isn't Far” is the theme of Gannon University’s Relay for Life
“When You Wish Upon A Star, A Cure For Cancer Isn't Far” is the theme of Gannon University’s Relay for Life on Saturday, May 3 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., rain or shine, at Gannon University Field, 430 Sassafras Street.

The event, a popular fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, gets underway with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m.

A ceremony honoring cancer survivors is at 11:30 a.m. and a “Fight Back” ceremony at 1 p.m.

The climax of the day will come after dark when luminary candles will be lit to remember those who were lost to cancer, at 8:45 p.m.

The event is and a popular campus project, said Gannon Relay for Life organizer Whitney Douglas, a junior physician assistant major from Morrow, Ohio.

“We have a club on campus and we spend all year preparing for this event.”

The preparation is necessary because the Gannon event offers more than the usual Relay format of walking laps, though that is still the centerpiece of the event.

On-site fundraisers involving nine Gannon University clubs and associations will be part of Saturday’s event.

The events and their associated organizations are:
• Bake Sale (Locks for Hope)
• Can jam games (Alpha Kappa Psi professional business honorary society)
• Corn hole tournament (Alpha Sigma Tau social sorority)
• Dream catcher sale (Sigma Sigma Sigma social sorority)
• Fruity tropical drinks sale (Gannon University Residence Life)
• Hot dog sale (Alpha Sigma Alpha social sorority)
• Ladder golf games (Alpha Sigma Tau social sorority)
• Popsicle sale (Gamma Sigma Sigma service sorority)
• Walking taco sale (Gannon University Society of Physician Assistants)

Fundraising has been going on all year long; a sale of t-shirts for the event sold 190 shirts and raised $1,400 for the
American Cancer Society.

Douglas expects 250-300 participants, many of whom will be cancer survivors, and the public is invited to participate.

Registration will be available at the event and online at http://www.relayforlife.org\pagannon.
