Garage Sale Safety

With warm weather here, now is the time many people host garage sales. Millcreek police offer some tips to make sure your family and belongings aren’t vulnerable while you are hosting a garage sale.
June 1, 2014 - The time of year is here when people line their front lawns and driveways with unwanted items during garage sales.

A garage sale may seem harmless, but burglaries and other similar incidents happening during these kinds of events are not uncommon.

“We've had experiences where people were working in their front yards and people have gone in their back doors and burglarized them and also vice versa where they've been in the backyard and they've gone in the front door and burglarized them," said Millcreek Township patrolman Matt Shollenberger.

If you're hosting a garage sale, Shollenberger has a few tips to keep you and your family safe.

“Make sure there's no one wandering around the neighborhood that you don't know. Make your neighbors aware that there are yard sales going on. Keep all the belongings that you want to keep safe locked up, doors closed," said Shollenberger.
