The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Erie County is starting a Peer Support Group. The Peer Support Group will meet on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Meetings will be held at NAMI’s office, located at 1611 Peach Street, Suite 105. The first meeting will be held on June 1st, 2014. Please enter on the Peach Street side of the building; NAMI’s office will be the first door on your left.

NAMI of Erie County’s Peer Support Group is open to adults, ages 18 and older, who are facing the challenges of mental illness. The support group will be led by NAMI Peer Mentors. Participants can discuss the obstacles they face while recovering from their mental illness and find support from their peers in order to overcome them. Participants can also find out about new resources available to them and learn new recovery strategies. Pictured at right are Emily (L) and Susan (R), who will be mentoring the group.

Denise L. Kolivoski, MBA, NAMI of Erie County’s executive director is excited about the new Peer Support Group. “NAMI of Erie County is thrilled to start a new support group for individuals facing the challenges of mental illness. Our Family Support Group has made a tremendous impact on family members and loved ones and NAMI hopes this new Peer Support Group can do the same.”

Attending the Peer Support Group is free and easy. For your convenience, there is no registration necessary for the support group; simply come on an as-needed basis. Attendees do not need to have participated in NAMI’s Peer-to-Peer Recovery Education program to be a part of the Peer Support Group nor do they need a formal mental health diagnosis.

NAMI of Erie County also offers a Family Support Group that will continue to meet as scheduled. This support group is held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at NAMI’s office.
