NAMI of Erie County’s Signature Programs Start

The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Erie County’s signature programs,
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Erie County’s signature programs, the Peer-to-Peer Recovery Education Program and the Family-to-Family Education Program, are starting this month! The Peer-to-Peer program is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 16th while the Family-to-Family session is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, September 24th. The programs are offered at no cost to participants. Both classes will run from 6:00-8:30 p.m. and be held at Gannon University. For more information about the programs, or to register, please contact NAMI of Erie County at (814) 456-1773 or visit http://www.NAMIerie.org.

NAMI’s Peer-to-Peer program, funded by United Way of Erie County, is a free 10-week educational course for adults with mental illness. The evidence-based Peer-to-Peer program is focused on helping particpants achieve a significant level of recovery in their own lives. The program is mentored by the participants’ peers. Each mentor has taken the course and been trained by NAMI to teach it. The program provides participants with a life-long recovery plan, as well as the ability to identify the thoughts, feelings, moods, and behaviors that could indicate a relapse and take proactive steps to prevent the relapse from occurring.

NAMI’s Family-to-Family program is a free 12-week educational course for family members and caregivers of individuals with mental illness. The evidence-based program provides participants with an understanding of mental illness, advocating for better treatment of their loved one, communication skills, coping skills, and self-care methods. The program also features interactive excercises that allow participants to better empathize with their loved one. Many graduates call the program “life-changing.” Pictured at left is Emily Czerpak, NAMI program coordinator, and Missi Berquist, a Family-to-Family instructor, reviewing updated materials for the program.
