Preservation Erie will hold its Greater Erie Awards Thursday, May 1,
2014, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Masonic Temple Ballroom 32 West Eighth Street.

This year’s theme, “Sustaining the Gem City,” has guided the selection of three institutions to receive the 2014 Greater
Erie Awards for their unique contributions to sustaining the character and places of Greater Erie: the Remnant Shop, Kraus Department Store and the Downtown YMCA.

The Remnant Store at 306 East 11th sells quality upholstery fabric, from factory end bolts.

Historic Kraus Department Store at 810 Parade offers services from pipe threading to screen repair and products from lamp shades to pet supplies.

Located at 31 West Tenth Street, the downtown YMCA has been "devoted to developing spirit, mind and body for the entire family" for almost a century.

Following presentation of the awards, the keynote address will be given by Ed McMahon, one of the country’s most incisive analysts of planning and land use issues and trends.

Mr. McMahon believes that “regional problems require regional solutions.” Successful communities “have high expectations” and cooperate with their neighbors to address pollution, traffic and loss of green space.

McMahon concludes saying that community identity is more important than corporate design policy.

McMahon holds the Charles E. Fraser Chair on Sustainable Development at the Urban
Land Institute in Washington, D.C. where he is nationally known as a thought provoking speaker and
leading authority on topics related to sustainable development, land conservation, smart growth, and historic preservation.

Admission to the event is $50, which includes a one-year Preservation Erie membership and invitations to several behind-the-scenes tours of re-purposed historic properties and presentations
by local craftsmen who specialize in historic preservation trades. Event tickets may be purchased online via PayPal at http://www.preservationerie.org.
