Priest Honors Parents’ Memory with Scholarship

The Rev. Msgr. Andrew Karg’s gift to Gannon University honoring his parents.
July 3, 2014 - The Rev. Msgr. Andrew Karg’s gift to Gannon University honoring his parents will establish the Louis J. and Rose M. Karg Endowed “Power” Scholarship with the gift matched under the provisions of the “Power” Scholarship Challenge.

Louis Karg and his brothers established three successful businesses in Venango County, Pennsylvania, including auto service, oil distribution and grain milling ventures. He and his wife Rose had eight children.

Msgr. Karg attended Gannon College and went onto to earn his philosophy degree at St. Bonaventure University’s Christ the King Seminary. He was ordained in Rome in 1964 with a bachelor ’s degree in sacred theology and also earned a M.Ed. from Westminster College.

“I wanted to share the opportunity I had in my life and help kids go to college and take advantage of the education that Gannon has to offer,” he said.

Msgr. Karg currently serves as a member of the Gannon University Board of Trustees and served at many diocesan parishes throughout his career including, St. Anthony, Walston, St. Michael Parish in Greenville, Pennsylvania and as headmaster at Kennedy Catholic High School in Hermitage, Pennsylvania.

The Louis J. and Rose M. Karg Endowed “Power” Scholarship is among the almost 200 scholarships at Gannon endowed by corporations, foundations, families and individuals. Last year, Gannon University awarded nearly $914,000 in scholarships to more than 400 deserving students from a diversity of locations, backgrounds and financial circumstances.

More than 90 percent of undergraduate students received some type of Gannon grant or scholarship. Endowed gifts to Gannon can also help fund faculty positions, professorships, chairmanships, faculty excellence and study abroad programs at the University.
