Public Weighs in on Hotel Proposal

Erie county council hears from public about hotel bond guarantee proposal made by the Erie County Convention Center Authority.
January 28, 2014 - Members of the public shared their opinions on the Erie County Convention Center Authority’s hotel bond guarantee proposal tonight in front of county council.

Some familiar faces who took the podium, like representatives from Scott Enterprises who have voiced their disapproval of the building of a publicly-funded hotel, say private developers should be able to develop that area.

Authority officials like Casey Wells and Roger Richards still made the case that another hotel would be viable to the community, bring in more tourists and conventions, and help build up the bayfront.

The Authority is hoping to borrow an amount not to exceed $60 million in bond or bank financing for a new hotel next to the convention center, and it wants the county to approve a debt guarantee.

Community members weighing in tonight have very different opinions on this proposal and the county's role in this project.

If you’d like your opinion to be heard, contact your councilperson to have your say or to sign up to speak at the next county council meeting on February 11th.

This ordinance will be read for a second time at the aforementioned date, on which date a vote could possibly be made.
