***Rabies Alert*** Erie County Raccoon Tests Positive for Rabies

A teenager found a dead raccoon lying inside the family’s barn.
A teenager found a dead raccoon lying inside the family’s barn.

The family dog had been scratched by an unknown animal two days prior to finding the dead raccoon.

The raccoon was collected and submitted by the Pennsylvania Game Commission to the Pennsylvania Veterinary Laboratory in Harrisburg, PA where it tested positive for rabies.

No people were exposed to the raccoon.

One dog with a current rabies vaccine received a rabies booster and will be quarantined for 90 days to the owner’s home.

Pennsylvania law requires all dogs and non-feral cats three months of age and older to be vaccinated against rabies.

Booster vaccinations must be administered periodically to maintain lifelong immunity.

Failure to comply with the law may result in a fine of up to $300.
