Retailers Already Rolling out Back to School Deals

Retailers estimate shoppers to spend around $650 on back to school gear.
July 22, 2014 - Get ready to set that alarm clock. Before you know it, it will be time to go back to school.

Retailers across the country are advertising for back to school deals earlier than years past. Experts say it's because they are meeting the needs of consumers and taking advantage of the second biggest shopping season of the year.

From clothing to school supplies in all shapes and sizes, prices are slashed. Retailers estimate shoppers to spend around $650 on back to school gear, with the best deals in store, not online. “The deals are pretty much going on from here on out, so certainly you want to look for those one day sales, want to get the latest buy one get ones and just check the retailers. They know what to point you towards and they're your biggest advocate when you're out there," Millcreek Mall Marketing Director Nicole Adwell said.

Teja Litwiler said she has learned it's sometimes better to wait until school starts to begin shopping for her daughter Emaline because teachers may have different requests for supplies and so do the kids. "I think it's just pushing the consumerism. I've noticed too a lot of times when I've gone back to school shopping this early, the kids want something different closer to the year. You end up doing it twice and buying more. If stores push it now, they're banking on you're gonna buy things now and gonna come back and buy more," Litwiler said.

Experts say the recent rollout is also attributed to schools starting much earlier in the south.
