Snowy Owls Tracked By Tiny Transmitters

Two owls were trapped for the project
we've had our share of snowstorms this year, but none of them involved snowy owls....until now.

Project Snowstorm hit Erie this past weekend and involved inserting tiny solar powered transmitters into snowy owls so the birds can be tracked and documented.

Over the past several months, the population of the snowy owl has exploded and this was the perfect chance to catch and tag two of the owls, who were named Erie and Millcreek.

The birds were taken to the Tom Ridge Environmental Center where the transmitters were attached to the birds. This will allow scientists to track the birds and learn about their feeding and breeding habits, and to see if there are more males than females and where the owls travel.
