Tarbell House Open to Public on August 9 in Titusville

The annual free public Open House at the Tarbell House will be held on Saturday, August 9
The annual free public Open House at the Tarbell House will be held on Saturday, August 9 from noon until 4 p.m., at 324 East Main Street, Titusville, PA. This event follows the Titusville Oil Festival’s parade which goes along Main Street in front of the Tarbell House.

This two-story Italianate home was constructed in 1870 as the family home of Franklin Tarbell, his wife Esther, and their three children, including Ida Minerva Tarbell, the eldest child. Ida Tarbell attended and graduated from Titusville High School and then Allegheny College before entering the field of journalism and what today would be called investigative reporting.

This historic property is owned by the nonprofit Oil Region Alliance, which is gradually restoring it to the appearance and configuration corresponding to the period of 1870 – 1918 when the Tarbell family was in residence. The exterior work to date has included return to original roof line, installation of replica Italianate front porch, painting using the original colors, addition of a handicapped-accessible ramp to the side porch, and planting of perennial gardens. Inside the concentration so far has been upgrading electrical, lighting, security, fire/smoke detection, plumbing, and HVAC to modern safety and building codes while retaining the historic appearance and key elements.

Most of the antique furnishings and exhibits normally found on the first floor of the Tarbell House are presently in storage because contractors will begin work on the interior floors, walls, and ceilings shortly after the Open House date. Therefore, the Titusville Area School District will display items from the eclectic art collection of Gerson Leiber inside the Tarbell House during the Open House.
