Taste of Erie Kicks off Celebrate Erie Weekend

The next few days will be jam packed with events in downtown Erie.
From local vendors to big name bands, there's a lot to celebrate this weekend at Celebrate Erie 2014.

The next few days are jam packed with events, and it all ends with a bang on Sunday.

"I've had a lot of pulled pork sandwiches across the country and this was the best for sure. And then she talked me into putting some coleslaw on top of it, ugh, it was out of this world!” That was Max Bennink’s reaction to an out-of-this world sandwich at Taste of Erie on Thursday night.

The event kicked off Celebrate Erie weekend with five vendors including Three B Saloon, Brewerie at Union Station, Sluggers Sports Bar, the Mercyhurst Culinary Cab and Trina’s.

This weekend will include local bands and local vendors, a chalk walk along State Street and a kids’ zone.

A “celebrate diversity” stage on 10th Street will also host performances from a variety of cultures.

Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott says this event is important for everyone who visits Erie.

"It's a good time each year for us to celebrate everything that we enjoy about our hometown, and we also like to attract people from out of town, to bring them here to see what we have to offer. Cause you know once people come here and see Erie, they love it and come back as well,” said Mayor Sinnott.

And for those who come down to celebrate, there’s a little bit of something for everyone.

"It's just great to get out with the community and see everybody, it's just a great gathering, it's always a cool thing to do,” said Keith Montigny of Erie.

"We try to come up every summer, sort of finish up, and I guess we're finishing summer this year, it's gonna snow I think. Yeah it's great, Erie's a great place, have a lot of good things to do,” said Bennink, of Corry.

A Michael Jackson tribute band will perform will perform on the main stage on Friday night.

Classic rock band, Cheap Trick, will perform on Saturday.

Sawyer Brown will play on Sunday night followed by a fireworks display on the bayfront, hosted by Zambelli Fireworks.
