The Erie Branch of the State Civil Service Office Could Close

According to the executive director of the Pennsylvania State Civil Service Commission, lack of funding from the Governor's proposed budget could permanently close Erie’s State Civil Service office.
March 10, 2014 - The local branch of the State Civil Service office could close this summer.

According to the executive director of the Pennsylvania State Civil Service Commission, lack of funding from the Governor's proposed budget could permanently close Erie’s State Civil Service office.

That closure could be effective June 30 of this year.

State Representative Pat Harkins is concerned that closing the office will result in job losses and a longer commute to Pittsburgh to take the civil service test.

"Again, to have somebody drive to Pittsburgh to take a test and in a down economy when people are trying to get back to work, this is the last thing we need to wreck havoc on people's lives," Rep. Harkins said.

The Erie office isn't the only one on the chopping block; Scranton, Johnstown, Lock Haven and Allentown also face possible closure.

Representative Harkins is working with those legislatures and Erie officials to try and keep the office open.
