JULY 21, 2014-- Elliot Spaeder and Norman Stark have been training for months to take on the more than 24 mile swim from the shores of Lake Erie in Ontario, to the shores of Lake Erie in North East. Spaeder and his team are all packed up and ready to start their journey to Canada. Spaeder will begin his swim from Long Point, Canada to Freeport, North East on Tuesday. Stark will also take on the lake later this week, he plans to swim on Saturday. The two will swim the guidance of Lake Erie Open Water Swimming Association. Both swimmers have been raising money for charities throughout their training. Spaeder says he raised more than 10,000 dollars for the Downtown YMCA. He says it’s an organization that is near and dear to his heart, he has been swimming there his whole life and training there. The donations will help its metro teen program and with the pool. Stark has raised more than 12,000 dollars that he will donate to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. Stark says he hopes to help the veterans of our country. The 2 aren’t the only ones hoping to add their names to the list, Lake Erie Open Water Swimming Association officials say 9 more people are interested in attempting the swim next summer.
