UPMC-Highmark Agreement Update

An announcement was expected today on an agreement concerning services
June 26, 2014:  Harrisburg – The Governor’s Office, including the Insurance Department and the Department of Health, and the Office of Attorney General today released the following joint statement regarding a transition agreement between Highmark and UPMC:

This is a highly complex matter with far-reaching implications for the citizens of Western Pennsylvania. For this reason, it is imperative that any discussion of this agreement be withheld until the legal document has been appropriately finalized with the court system.

We continue to work together to reach an agreement that puts patients first. Our collective hope is that both Highmark and UPMC can come together with the best interests of the region in mind.

According to the ABC affiliate WTAE in Pittsburgh ... Governor Corbett and Attorney General Kathleen Kane are expected to announce an agreement that will allow Highmark insurance enrollees who are receiving treatment for certain health care conditions to continue getting help from UPMC doctors after the two giants end their relationship Jan. 1.

Gov. Tom Corbett says he's met with the chairmen of western Pennsylvania's biggest insurer, Highmark, and its dominant hospital system, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Corbett said he asked them during a Tuesday meeting to put aside a bitter disagreement and work together in good faith to protect consumers as the companies' contract nears an end.

Highmark subscribers stand to lose in-network access to UPMC doctors and hospitals when the contract ends Dec. 31, meaning they'd pay higher rates. Highmark is required to tell state regulators by July 1 whether it has secured a new contract with UPMC.

Highmark covers 3.2 million people in western Pennsylvania.

Corbett has said the dispute shouldn't force any patient in the midst of treatment to find a new doctor or force anyone to travel farther for hospital care.
