West 38th Street Bridge Hydrodemolition

You may have noticed some construction on the West 38th Street bridge in Erie
You may have noticed some construction on the West 38th Street bridge in Erie.

The worn out structure is getting a cost-effective facelift to make you safer. Construction began on July 7th.

The cement was starting to decay on the bridge, and in order to avoid a more costly and time consuming repair down the road, they're taking preventative measures now. By doing so, they are adding decades of service life to the bridge.

Engineers chose to use hydrodemolition method. It produces a smoother, better surface on the deck than using a jackhammer would to blast away old concrete.

Engineers will ultimately replace the deck, repair and replace concrete and strengthen the joints.

Along with the bridge closure comes some lane closures on I-79 below the bridge, but 79 must stay open between 7 – 9 a.m. and 3 – 5 p.m.

They're expecting the bridge to re-open on August 28th.
