August 27, 2014 - Officials from the Redevelopment Authority say they're making progress when it comes to removing blighted properties, the numbers show they've decreased since Mayor Joe Sinnott's administration.

Since 2006 there have been 254 properties taken off the list with 166 of those coming off in 2010. Officials say for a house to be deemed blighted the house must meet one out of nine criteria on the state's list.

It's a lengthy process for the authority to take over a property by eminent domain but once they do, they're able to clean up the area.

Officials say they are able to fix up these properties through community block grants. But just like the majority of funding, the area has seen a decrease in funding over the last several years.
