The Foundation today also announced the initial round of nominees for the 2014 award (see attached list).
The annual Bob Feller Act of Valor Award was created in 2013 with the support of the United States Navy, Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Indians, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, the Battleship USS Alabama, and the gracious consent of Mrs. Anne Feller. It honors 3 individuals that reflect the values, integrity and dedication to serving our country that Bob Feller himself possessed. The award is presented to one U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer, one Baseball Hall of Fame member, and one active Major League Baseball player. Finalists for the active player award will be announced and recognized at the July 5th Cleveland Indians vs. Kansas City Royals game at Cleveland’s Progressive Field. Winners in all three categories will be honored in a Veterans Day ceremony in Washington, D.C. at the United States Navy Memorial.
The Foundation also charters an educational effort. "In addition to the annual awards, the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation will use the Bob Feller story to teach the youth of today the lessons of citizenship, service to one's country, and sacrifice in times of great national need. Teaching the legacy of the greatest generation to the youngest generation will help instill in them the virtue of service to others," said Bob DiBiasio, Cleveland Indians Sr. Vice President of Public Affairs and Award Foundation Board Member.
Last year’s award winners were Hospital Corpsman Chief Petty Officer Garth Sinclair of the United States Navy, Hall of Famer Yogi Berra of the New York Yankees, and Cy Young Award-winning pitcher Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers. Chief Sinclair was recognized for 27 years of service to our nation and devoting thousands of off-duty hours to coaching youth sports; Yogi Berra for his military service in the US Navy during WWII including combat during the Normandy Invasion; and Justin Verlander for his assistance in providing mental health services to returning vets and his significant financial contributions through his twin foundations, “Victory for Veterans” and “Wins for Warriors.”
The Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundations asks all Americans to join us in reflecting upon the true meaning of this Memorial Day and remembering those who so valiantly sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
