City Council Researching Ways to Address Delinquent Garbage Fees

- February 5, 2014 - City Council is taking steps to address the millions of dollars in delinquent garbage fees.

But they want to make sure they're going in the right direction legally.

A resolution passed unanimously this morning, asking the city solicitor to research the feasibility of all landlords to be current with all taxes and fees levied by the city of Erie.

Paul Vojtek, CEO of Erie Water Works, joined city council today during its finance meeting to talk about the garbage fee dilemma.

Erie Water Works is the body that is in charge of the bills.

Officials say there are about $2.5 million worth of delinquent garbage fees; many of them are reportedly landlords.

But since the end of January, the city received payments totaling more than $55,000.

They're hopeful they will be able to come up with a process that will effectively deal with those who don't pay their bills.
