March 4, 2014 - The Commonwealth is facing a volunteer firefighter shortage that is also a problem across Erie County.

In the 1970's there were around $300,000 volunteers, but now, that number is closer to 50,000.

Jim Hawryliw from Fairfield Hose Company says it's tough to recruit new volunteers, but even harder to retain them.

He says incentives from the state could potentially deter the decline of volunteer firefighters.

Volunteers are now required to complete 188 hours of training, but Hawryliw says anyone interested in becoming a volunteer should look into it.
