March 4, 2014 - A packed room waited anxiously Tuesday evening for a major vote that would decide the fate of two elementary schools: Spartansburg and Conelway elementary schools.

The Corry area school board voted unanimously, 9-0, to close the schools and to reconfigure the grade levels at the remaining schools in the Corry area school district.

The closures will the save the district a little more than $620,000 a year.

School board members tell us this was no easy decision, with deliberations and conversations underway until late this afternoon.

Many community members have been opposed to these closures, saying - in the past - that this could take away from the close-knit community feel, and that for some students this will mean a commute of 20 miles each way to school.

The school closures are effective as of the 2014-2015 school year.
