During a check presentation State Senator Sean Wiley said the first ever veterans expo was a success, bringing in more than 400 veterans and their families to find services available in Erie. The event also raised more than $11,000 and all of the money is being donated to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on State Street across from Veterans Stadium.
"The challenges that our vets face when they come home are insurmountable so anything we can do to help with that we're obligated to do," Senator Sean Wiley said.
Officials say the memorial cost $500,000 and the money from the expo will be a great asset to help complete the second phase of the project. The second phase added the prayer stone and the money will also go to the paneling around the outside.
Officials from the memorial say that the project is meant to help people remember the veterans who gave their lives for our country and learn more about the war.
State Senator Sean Wiley says the expo was such a success they already have plans to host the second annual expo in April of next year.
