McKibben’s address, “Can We Still Fight Climate Change: Lessons from the Front Lines,” will be delivered Thursday, Oct. 2, at 8 p.m. in the university’s Louis C. Cole Auditorium – Memorial Hall.
The keynote address, added to Edinboro’s extensive lineup of Homecoming events in 2013, complements other academic programming tied to the celebration and fosters a love of learning within students, alumni, and members of the surrounding community. The first keynote address was delivered by author and writer Erin Gruwell to an enthusiastic, standing-room-only audience.
“The university initiated the Homecoming Keynote Address to facilitate intellectual discussion and to remind students and alumni that Edinboro is committed to providing its students with a top-notch education,” said Robert Hass, professor in the English and Liberal Studies Department and chairman of the Academic Homecoming Committee. “By bringing in prominent speakers such as Erin Gruwell and Bill McKibben, Edinboro makes good on that promise in a very exciting and tangible way.”
McKibben is regarded by many as the nation’s leading environmental activist. The author of 14 books about the environment, he also founded the global grass-roots climate change campaign 350.org, which has coordinated 15,000 rallies in 189 countries. His first book, “The End of Nature,” published in 1989, is regarded as the first book for a general audience on climate change.
McKibben is Distinguished Scholar at Middlebury College and holds honorary degrees from 18 colleges. In 2011 he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he was the 2013 winner of the Gandhi Peace Award and the Thomas Merton Award.
Edinboro University’s Homecoming Celebration, Oct. 2-4, has the theme “Rock the Boro.” Activities planned Friday, Oct. 3, include the 26th Annual Speech-Language Pathology Alumni Conference, Alumni & Friends Golf Outing, and a Bonfire and Illumination Celebration. Events Oct. 4 are highlighted by the Homecoming Parade, a festival on the campus lawns at midday and Fighting Scots football vs. IUP.
