August 26, 2014 - The opportunity to apply for Section 8 housing opened up for the first time in five years in the City of Erie. The deadline to apply has come to pass, and now the housing authority will soon begin its selection process.

More than 2,000 applications have been submitted for section 8 housing, that's the housing program that helps low-income families pay for rent in the private sector. Officials say the applicants will be assigned random lottery numbers, so that the selection process runs smoothly.

Housing Authority Executive Director John Horan says he actually expected more applications than those that were received. Horan says there are additional housing options in the public sector in case you missed the Section 8 opportunity.
