What officials say began as a basement fire spreads through a house tonight.
McKean firefighters responded to the 97 hundred block of Old Route 99 around 7:30 tonight.

When they arrived at the scene, the McKean fire chief says they immediately found heavy smoke coming from the basement and first floor.
There was also a heavy amount of fire.

We're told there was no one home at the time, but two dogs died as a result of the blaze.
There's heavy fire damage in the kitchen, with smoke and heat damage throughout the house.
The search for a cause is beginning in the basement.

According to Erie County 9-1-1, the fire was called in by an ambulance crew responding to a separate nearby call.
