“The attached garage was fully engulfed in fire when we arrived on the scene,” Chief Brian Lehtonen said. “The fire was already spreading into the house. There was a woman in the house when the fire started.”
The three-floor house is the home of Dr. Ashok V. Kondru and his wife Dr. Nafisa B. Kondru. Dr. A. Kondru is a doctor of gastroenterology and internal medicine. He is affiliated with the Ashtabula County Medical Center. Dr. N. Kondru is a pediatrician and is affiliated with eight hospitals in northeast Ohio.
The Ashtabula Township, Conneaut, Kingsville, and Sheffield fire departments responded to the mutual aid call. Jefferson supplied an oxygen truck to help fight the stubborn blaze.
“We have about 25 to 30 firefighters here working to extinguish the fire,” Lehtonen said.
Crews were still at the scene five hours after arriving at the scene.
“We are in the basement putting out what remains of the fire,” Lehtonen said.
Lake Road was closed for more than six hours as firefighters battled both the fire and the cold weather.
