different religions, uttered prayers of serenity for the soldiers and sailors possibly facing the last minutes of their lives. As
lifejackets grew scarce, they were seen removing their own and handing them to others without question of religion, race,
creed or ethnicity. The on-lookers, who managed to find safety, last saw the chaplains linked arm-in-arm, praying as they
went down with the ship.
Gannon will host an interfaith memorial service honoring those four chaplains on Thursday,
at 2 p.m. in the Yehl Alumni Room in Waldron Campus Center. The four chaplains, Lt. George L. Fox,
Methodist; Lt. Alexander D. Goode, Jewish; Lt. John P. Washington, Roman Catholic; and Lt. Clark V. Poling, Dutch
Reformed, will be honored for their admirable acts that fateful night, and Gannon will pay tribute to all those that have
served, and whose courage and faith have sustained our country.
Major General William D. Razz Waff will be the keynote speaker for the event. Gen. Waff is responsible for coordinating the
care of wounded warriors with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, acts as Chairman of the Army Reserve Forces
Policy Committee and is currently focusing on the implementation of the Army Total Force Policy.
“I think this is a tremendous opportunity to share in this interfaith activity, to be prayerful, to be thankful, and to recognize the
importance that the military has to preserve our religious freedom, among our other freedoms,” expressed Ron Swift LTC
(Ret) USAR, veterans financial aid & enrollment counselor.
The University will bring together five local Junior ROTC programs, members of its own “Pride of PA” ROTC Battalion,
veterans from Gannon and surrounding local colleges and universities and members of local American Legion and VFW
posts. The public is also encouraged to attend
