Though National Nurses Week begins on May 6, that is also Finals Week at Gannon University,
so the Villa Maria School of Nursing is celebrating early with observations and community service events in
- On Sunday April 6 at 11:30 a.m., the Villa Maria School of Nursing will host its annual awards
ceremony in the Pietraszek Room of the Waldron Campus Center, 124 W. Seventh St. to honor
outstanding nursing students. Immediately following this ceremony, Eta Xi Chapter of the Honor
Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, will induct new members into the chapter.
Membership is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate
excellence in scholarship and to nurse leaders exhibiting exceptional achievements in nursing.

- At noon on Monday April 7, a pinwheel garden will be planted at the water fountain at the W.
10th St. entrance of Morosky College of Health Professions and Sciences fountain, 150 W. 10th St., as
part of the Pinwheels for Prevention initiative for National Child Abuse Awareness Month. The garden
is a project of the Erie County Child Abuse Task Force, which is led by Gannon University and by
Carolynn Masters, Ph.D., RN, provost and vice president for academic affairs. The task force is
comprised of leaders from numerous local agencies and organizations that have joined together to
better respond to the problem of child abuse.
- On Thursday April 10 from 4-7pm, Gannon University nursing faculty and students will host the
annual Health Fair at the John E. Horan Garden Apartments of the Housing Authority of the City of
Erie. The Fair, entitled "Join Us for A Roadtrip,” will be held in the nursing facility at 2120B E. 10th St.
from 4-7 p.m. and will feature a bounce castle for kids and tables staffed by senior nursing students
from Gannon’s Promoting Healthy Communities class on interactive programs that teach health and
safety to children and families. The tables include “Stranger Danger,” “Don't Be InTEXTicated” (driving
safety), a booth addressing prevention of domestic violence, a board game to help prevent animal bites
and injuries, and fire safety. The Kids’ Club of the YMCA of Greater Erie and Multicultural Community
Resource Center are partners in the event.
- Funded by a joint grant from Gannon University and the Housing Authority of the City of Erie, the
Villa Maria School of Nursing provides for a nursing center at Horan that is open every Tuesday and
Thursday to provide health screenings, influenza vaccinations, blood pressure, blood sugar and body
mass index screenings free of charge.
