Each year Mayville, New York hosts its President’s Day Weekend Winter Festival for the community to enjoy the outdoors. For decades, people have come to see the centerpiece of the weekend, the castle made entirely of ice. The blocks of ice are taken directly from Chautauqua Lake. With help from the local community the castle went up quickly, in part because of the thickness of the ice. For many people this weekend is a tradition and they say this years castle is very impressive. The weekend festivities also include more winter weather fun including, sleigh rides, ice skating, a polar plunge, snowball fight and bonfire. This year’s castle was extra special for one couple who threw their own royal wedding and got married at the ice castle. When the structure is no longer safe the Amish collect the ice to keep their food cool. Officials say with ice this thick it could last through the summer. Fireworks will take place during the festival on February 15th beginning at 8 PM.
