The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announces the start of a project that will improve travel on a portion of Route 19 in Erie County.

The section of Route 19 is located from a point just south of the Off Road Express driveway to an area north of Dorn Road. The project length is about one half mile long.

Work will include widening Route 19 to add a center turn lane, modifying a vertical curve in the road to improve sight distance, and upgrading drainage and signs.

The contractor is Joseph McCormick Construction Co., Inc. The contract cost is $1,625,935, which will be paid entirely with federal funds.

Work is scheduled to begin Monday, May 12, and the scheduled completion date is Aug. 27.

Traffic will be maintained with lane restrictions through the project, except over the July 4 weekend. The roadway is scheduled to be closed from Thursday, July 3 at 6 p.m. to Monday, July 7 at 6 a.m. with traffic detoured on Route 97 to Interstate 90. Additionally, Dorn Road and Townhall Road will have brief closures to complete the roadway tie-ins.

To avoid work zone intrusions or crashes, PennDOT urges motorists to slow down in work zone areas, and also to be alert to changing conditions, avoid distractions and to pay attention to signs and flaggers. Drive responsibly in work zones for your safety and the safety of the workers.
