The district attorney's office says 48 year old Nathan Howard furnished the drugs that caused the death of an Erie County Prison inmate. He is being charged with possession, three counts of furnishing and drug delivery resulting in death.

The inmate who died has been identified as 35 year old Steven Burkhart. The criminal complaint says Burkhart died from the combined effects of heroin and fentanyl. He overdosed on May 2 and was transported to UPMC Hamot where he died on May 5. Investigators say the same combination of drugs sickened other inmates around the same time.

These charges are a result of a five week investigation by Erie County detectives. The district attorney's office says that the Erie County Prison warden and his staff assisted in the investigation and cooperated fully with the offices requests. The investigation did not produce any evidence of criminal wrongdoing on behalf of the employees of the Erie County Prison.
