Maple syrup farmers are preparing for the upcoming season by cleaning and putting together their sugar house equipment and even tapping maple trees. Jeffery Yatzer owns Yatzer Maple Products in Edinboro and spent Wednesday assembling and cleaning his evaporator that by next week at this time will be filled with sweet sap, ready to boil down to maple syrup.
In Waterford Township, Bill Phillips has already stretched hundreds of feet of plastic tubing from his maple trees to a giant holding tank in the woods. Phillips uses the plastic tubing to run the sap to the holding tank instead of hanging buckets under his several hundred maple trees.
If you would like to tour some of the area sugar houses and watch them make maple syrup, the 11th annual Maple Taste and Tour will be held the weekend of March 15th & 16th.
17 sugar houses in Erie, Crawford and Warren counties will open for the public to come and see the work that goes into making maple syrup.
For more information you can go to www.pamaple.org for who will be opening for that weekend
