January Unemployment Down to 6.7% in Erie County

- HARRISBURG MARCH 18 2014 – The January seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the Erie Metropolitan
Statistical Area (MSA) fell three-tenths of a percentage point to 6.7 percent. Over the year, the rate fell 1.4
percentage points. The January seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Pennsylvania decreased four-tenths to 6.4
percent, while the national rate decreased one-tenth to 6.6 percent.

Unemployment rates and rankings of nearby counties were: Crawford 6.1%,; Venango 6.6%, 
 Warren 5.3%.

In January, seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs in the Erie MSA fell 300 to 129,800. Since January 2013, jobs
increased 400 in the MSA. Detailed industry data for the MSA is not seasonally adjusted (see below).

 Winter weather caused more declines in mining, logging, and construction jobs this month, down 400 to 3,600.

 Retail trade jobs went down 500 this month as local retailers released seasonal help.

 Education and health services and state government each experienced decreases of 400 due to winter break at
local colleges and universitie
