June 13, 2014- State and local leaders are waging war on truancy in Erie County.
This morning, State Senator Sean Wiley and Probation and Parole Chairman Michael Potteiger announced a pilot program that would combat truancy.
The program is a collaborative effort with Wiley's office, Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole and Erie public schools.
The purpose of it is to identify truant children within the district who have parents under supervision with the State Board of Probation and Parole.
Officials behind this new program say truancy is a systemic problem, And the best way to fight it is education and parental involvement.
The pilot will begin during the 2014-2015 school year.
Superintendent Doctor Jay Badams will help lead it.
