Local Legislator and Activist Wage War on PTSD

April 4, 2014- A State Representative and a local woman who lost her brother to PTSD are waging war on the disorder and working to change legislation locally.
Venus Azevedo-Laboda and State Representative Ryan Bizzarro say area veterans and families need support.
They're taking action locally.
Representative Bizzarro is working to ease the transition for veterans returning from combat to civilian life.
Bizzarro is proposing Veterans Treatment Court here in Erie.
Legislation is being circulated for co-sponsorship
He says it will change the way Pennsylvania deals with sentencing combat veterans for non-violent offenses and it focuses on properly dealing with PTSD.
The Veterans Treatment Court model requires regular court appearances and mandatory attendance at treatment sessions.
Bizzarro says veterans respond well to this structured environment because of their disciplined past.
Azevedo-Laboda says she believes Bizzarro's legislation as well as her new “Boots on Ground” outreach program for veterans and families could make a difference.
She will go before County Council next week and ask for resolution in support of her initiative.
