According to PA State Police in Girard, Michael Hohler, 53, and Matthew Kaliszewski, 33, both of Erie, were canoeing from McKean Township to Girard Township.
They left at 6p.m. on Monday afternoon, and traveled about 10 miles before coming to the railroad tubes near route 5.
When they reached the tubes, their canoe capsized and struck a downed tree, pinning Kaliszewski.
Kohler was able to get free, and attempted to rescue Kaliszewski, but due to rising, fast-moving water.
Kohler ran to get help, and when he returned with police officers, the man had disappeared, but the canoe was still where it became wedged up against the log.
Several fire departments and the coast guard were called to the scene to find Kaliszewski.
Kaliszewski's body was found just before 1a.m. and Erie county coroner Lyell Cook pronounced him dead around 2a.m.
PA State Police say both men were wearing life jackets, and the incident has been ruled accidental.
