June 3, 2014 - In an effort to make campus safer, Mercyhurst University is joining the ranks of several other campuses that have armed police officers.

The decision comes after the board of trustees adapted a policy on Saturday.

Police at both Mercyhurst and Mercyhurst North East will now carry guns starting in the spring of 2015.

University officials said this policy has been in talks for some time now, but what really prompted the decision was a recent streak of violence both nationally and locally.

This past September, a man took his own life by shooting himself directly in front of the campus.

Safety has and always will be a top priority for the Mercyhurst community and that is why they followed through.

At this point, Mercyhurst University’s police department is working to adapt their current policy and create a set of guideline for armed police officers.

Spring of 2015 is when police officers will be armed. They say the Sisters of Mercy support this initiative.
