The $10 million project began back in mid June since then, McDowell High School has been gutted from the ground up. Lockers have been removed to make way for upgraded bigger versions. The hallways will get new carpet and fresh coats of paint.the same goes for classrooms and science labs and new chemistry and physics labs will be constructed. The cafeteria is also expanding and the athletic offices will be moved. Crews spent Wednesday laying new turf.
District officials say safety and security has and will always be a top priority for students at both McDowell and McDowell Intermediate High Schools. A new camera system and new windows and doors all around the building. A security system with walkways so students coming in and out can be more closely maintained.
The $10 million project is expected to be completed by the start of the upcoming school year. Phase two of the project will begin next year and that will total at $10 million.
Both projects were paid for through a bond issue. That money is not coming out of the budget.
