Murder Suspect Stayed at City Mission

AUGUST 25,2014-- Johnathan Conklin and Charles Sanford are in custody for the shooting death of Mary Whitaker in Westfied, New York. The pair were arrested in Erie on Friday for their involvement in Whitaker's death that happened on August 20th. According to investigators, the men were attempting to rob Whitaker when she was fatally shot in the chest and leg. Charles Sanford listed his address as the Erie City Mission. The city mission is confirming today that Sanford had been staying there from June 4th of this year to August 7th. The mission said their records show Sanford was part of its Samaritan Care Emergency Shelter. Officials say Sanford had filed an extension to stay at the shelter longer than the sixty day limit while he looked for a job. Conklin's address was listed as unknown. The pair are facing charges including stealing property, carjacking and use of a firearm during a crime of violence.
