New Scam Targeting Seniors

- December 23, 2013 - A new scam is targeting seniors during this holiday season across the commonwealth, including, right here in the Erie area.
(D)-3rd district state representative Ryan Bizzarro says his office has been receiving many phone calls from constituents saying that someone is trying to scam them with a letter, and at times, a check.

One woman, who chose to not reveal her name, says she received a letter and a check for $3900 from a group calling themselves "Discover Financial Services."

The letter goes on to say that the recipient is one of nine drawn by the Mega Million Sweepstakes Raffle Machine, and that the recipient has won a total sum of $50,000.

The $3900 is said to help offset tax service fee obligations; however, before the check can be cashed, the recipient is advised to contact a claim agent to "explain the process."

Bizzarro says if you've received any of these kinds of strange phone calls, or letters, or checks, report it immediately either to his office, 814-835-2280, or the attorney general's office.
