United will offer a direct flight starting June 5th from Erie International Airport to Chicago O'Hare International Airport.
This good news for Erie comes on the heels of United announcing drastic cuts to its Cleveland hub.
However, airport officials say United jobs at the Erie International Airport will not be cut.
The executive director of the Erie International Airport says talks for the direct flight with United have been in the works for many years.
He says the direct flight is just what travelers in the Erie market have been asking for.
There will be two flights added to the schedule immediately as officials determine the final schedule based on demand.
Service to Cleveland will stop on June 4th with non-stop service to Chicago starting June 5th.
Erie will see a new line of jets to replace the turbo-props that fly to and from Cleveland.
Travelers and travel agency officials are excited about the news.
"I think it's going to be good. It just depends on whether the community supports it or not, which is very important to continued service and expanded service," said manager of Miller Travel Services, Eric Dahlstrand.
"It seems like a good idea. I think it broadens the places that United can get to," said traveler Matthew Massaro.
