August 6, 2014 - Penelec has asked for an approximate 8 percent increase for base distribution rate costs for customers.

First Energy, the parent company of Penelec sent the request to the public utility commission to raise electric rates that would be effective October 3. First Energy Officials say, if approved, this is the first time Penelec has raised its prices in 26 years.

The increase would cost customers who average 1,000 kilowatts a month, an additional cost of about $20 each month. The request has to go through the Public Utility Commission who have the option of opening an investigation into the matter.

The request was made to the PUC this week, the company says it expects to hear back within the next few weeks.
