Future law enforcement officers were on the range this morning honing the skills they need to keep them safe when their on the streets.

Cadets from the Mercyhurst Municipal Police Training Academy were at the Gem City Gun Club going through different scenarios they might encounter on the streets. The cadets were put through a stress test moving several heavy items then advancing on a target.

This will train them in the event of a foot chase and then an exchange of gunfire. Cadets were also trained on targets, an exercise used for eye coordination in a rapid fire scenario.

According to Bill Hale, Academy Director today’s training could be a lifesaver " Once you get hired your going to be carrying a weapon, to become proficient with that weapon you need practice, we can't give them everything but we can give them what they need to get hired."

Mercyhurst trains the majority of police officers in the region.
