It’s been one year since Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was named Pope of the more than 1.2 billion Catholics around the world.

He would be known from now on as Pope Francis and from the moment he stepped onto the Vatican balcony above Saint Peter’s Square, it was clear there was something special about this pope.

Pope Francis seemed to connect with the world. He was a man of the people, and Bishop Lawrence Persico says that’s what makes him stand out. Bishop Persico says Pope Francis is able to attract people because when he speaks, he speaks their language. “Everyone can understand him, he doesn’t talk like a text book”

Even the students we spoke with at Mercyhurst Prep agreed that this pope is the Pope of Hope.
From his simple ways to his picture on the cover of Rolling Stone students say they can relate to this pope.
