Safety Important in Rough Lake Water
JULY 23, 2014-- Changing weather can bring dangerous water conditions to our area. Lake Erie can have high waves and lateral currents that can be dangerous if swimmers and boaters aren’t prepared. Officials say it’s important to be aware of your surroundings when planning a trip to the water. Since Lake Erie is shallow, officials say wind can quickly cause rough water, creating high waves and currents. For beach goers a yellow flag at Presque Isle signals rough water and guards on duty are trained to change the depth and length of swimming areas depending on the location. Officials say the best thing to do when swimming in rough water is be aware of your surroundings and swim near the lifeguards. For boaters rough waters could cause your boat to capsize. Officials say before going out on your boat check the weather and for small craft advisories, It’s also important to make sure you have all the proper safety equipment.
