State Police Identify Man Killed in Route 18 Accident .

A man is dead and a child hospitalized after a pickup truck collided with a guardrail on Rt 18 just north of I-90, then slid off over an embankment. The crash was reported after 11:15pm Friday.

State Police say the truck which was driven by 24 year olg Gregory Rakowski of West Springfield, was traveling south when it drifted off the road and struck a guard rail which impaled the front of the silver pickup truck...extending through the cab into the bed of the truck.

Rescue workers from Platea VFD had to dismantle the guard rail and use the Hearst Tool to cut apart the tangled wreckage of the truck before they could reach the victim.

Deputy County Coroner Dennis Suscheck was at the scene and pronounced the victim dead about 2 am.

State Police told JET 24 Action News that the driver had a 3 year old boy in the truck at the time of the crash. The child was taken to UPMC Hamot Medical Center for treatment and later flown to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. State Police confirm the toddler was in a car seat at the time of the crash.
