Target 24: Bullying Facts

Bullying never just stays in the classroom anymore.

According to the National Education Association, 160,000 students in the United States miss school for the fear of being bullied. Studies suggest this is a growing problem. Pennsylvania ranks 4th in the country for the worst states for bullying. The National Education Association also says that nearly 100,000 students carry guns to school for protection.

Legally schools are responsible.

According to section 6 of House Bill 1067, the PA Anti-School Bullying Law requires each school to have a formal written policy on how bullying will be defined and enforced.

Many schools in the region look to the Ophelia Project, a national non-profit agency, to guide their classrooms to create a bully-free environment.

Even though these organizations are in the schools, we're told by parents and students that sometimes it's not enough.

Parents worry about their childrens well-being when they leave home, but school administrators say they are doing all they can.
